ANOTHER big win today for the Fair Pay for Faculty Assistants campaign!

April 3, 2017 — Three weeks after the UW-Madison Academic Staff Assembly overwhelmingly voted to adopt our resolution on fair pay for Faculty Assistants, the Faculty Senate voted overwhelmingly—in the presence of the chancellor and over the opposition of some members of the University Committee—to adopt a virtually identical resolution. With these two electrifying victories and previous endorsements by the ASM and TAA, the students, graduate employees, academic staff, and faculty of this university solidly and publicly support our campaign.

UFAS's Faculty Assistant pay campaign in the news

Jes King taught five class sections — discussions and labs — on a recent Thursday for his job as a faculty assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

King recently completed his master's degree, and is working as a faculty assistant in the chemistry department, part of a small group of instructional staff who now are paid less than their graduate student counterparts.

He and other faculty assistants interviewed for this article spoke with enthusiasm about their work.

Nevertheless, they have begun a campaign to persuade UW-Madison to bring their pay up to that of graduate student teaching assistants. The campaign was launched with the assistance of United Faculty and Academic Staff, UFAS, a labor union affiliated with AFT, American Federation of Teachers. Some of the faculty assistants are members of UFAS.

AFT-Wisconsin release: UW-Eau Claire faculty declare no confidence with historic vote

Eau Claire, WI: Faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire voted overwhelmingly in support of a resolution of no confidence in UW System President Ray Cross and the Board of Regents.  Members of AFT local 6481, United Faculty and Academic Staff of UW-Eau Claire, collected signatures from one-third of campus faculty to call for a special meeting of all faculty on the resolution, the first such meeting at the university in nearly fifty years.  The resolution, which passed by a landslide margin of 227-98, is the latest in a wave of no confidence resolutions across the UW System, a nationally unprecedented event.

A nationally unprecedented series of votes of no confidence in UW System President Ray Cross and the Board of Regents, led by AFT-Wisconsin Higher Education Council and American Association of University Professors members, has spread rapidly across the UW System.

AFT-Wisconsin endorses Russ Feingold

AFT-Wisconsin is proud to announce that it has endorsed Russ Feingold in his campaign for the US Senate.  President Kim Kohlhaas sent the following letter to Mr. Feingold to announce the endorsement:

2016 AFT-Wisconsin Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted

AFT-Wisconsin has a long tradition of offering educational scholarships to support dependents of members in good standing who wish to pursue a career in labor, education, health care or government service.  Currently, AFT-Wisconsin offers one $1,000 university scholarship and one $500 technical college scholarship. The application period for 2015-2016 scholarships is now open; applications are due to AFT-Wisconsin by March 15, 2016, and winners will be notified by May 1, 2016.

High school and college labor history contests

The Wisconsin Labor History Society sponsors two annual competitions for Wisconsin students.  Wisconsin high school students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in an essay contest on the theme of the importance of unions to their families and communities, with cash prizes of up to $300.  College students (two- or four-year) and graduate students can participate in a research paper competition, with a $500 prize available at the college level and $1000 at the graduate level.
