July 29, 2018 — Labor unions give workers a democratic voice in their workplaces and in government.

We are excited that so many United Faculty and Academic Staff (UFAS) members are running for political office. This is part of a nationwide trend among American Federation of Teachers members.

Congratulations to UFAS member Tanya Buckingham, recently elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors, and UFAS member Kate Cronin, recently elected as alderperson for the Verona City Council.

The involvement of union members in the political process continues in the 2018-2019 academic year. UFAS member Ann Groves Lloyd is running for Wisconsin State Assembly District 42, and UFAS member Satya Rhodes-Conway is running for mayor of Madison. The Wisconsin State Assembly elections are on November 6, 2018. The mayoral election is April 2, 2019, with a primary scheduled for Feb. 19, 2019.
